It is plain to see how brilliant Lego Technics is. Most of us had Lego sets when we were children and used it to build all sorts of things. For me, I used to build houses and I loved the big flat pieces. My husband always needed more figures, and when we had our children we made sure they had big flat pieces and lots of figures. But as kids get older they need more challenges, and so the Lego Technics range came about. This range isn’t for the faint-hearted, it is aimed at experienced Lego builders who know how Lego works. However, it is a great step further for children who love Lego and are curious about how things are put together. I recommend that adult supervision is in place at all times. Another quick word of caution – these Lego pieces are small and if a younger child were allowed them it would be a choking hazard. Perfect for the age range stated, these sets will encourage your children to express themselves as well as extending their engineering skills.
The Lego Technics range is for ages seven and upward. Take, for instance, the Lego 42059 “Stunt Truck” Building Toy which is aimed at children age seven to fourteen. This set has got a Lego ramp with it and the stunt truck building toy has a pull back motor to allow it to go hurtling forward and over the ramp. Your children can personalise it with the stickers provided. Children can build their own stunt truck, then play with it along with the stunt ramp.
Another toy for the 7 years upward range is the Lego Technic 42046: Getaway Racer. It has a pull-back motor making it a perfect play toy once it’s built. Children will love the big vertical exhaust pipes, the wide-rimmed low profile tires, and the black and gray colour scheme with super flames. Maybe treat your little one to the police interceptor (number 42047) so they can chase, capture and arrest the naughty getaway racer.
Combine LEGO Technic 42047 Police Interceptor Mixed with the 42046 Getaway Racer pull-back for a getaway car chase, or to create the Extreme Police Racer combi model.
Eight Years Plus
Children can build an articulated truck in the LEGO Technic 42062 “Container Yard” Building Toy, complete with working steering and opening doors. Of course, boys and girls have fun building the more complicated designs as well as playing with them afterward. Not only is it perfect for developing young minds but it encourages use of STEM subjects, such as mathematics, science and technology. In this particular set children can use the detachable trailer and loadable containers to create all sorts of stories and scenarios encouraging imaginative play.
The set also includes a container with workable steering and a boom loader, with a working grabber. This set also doubles up as a a Container Straddle-Carrier with a truck and container. All the Lego pieces work together with other sets from the same range, meaning the scope for imaginative play is practically limitless.
To go along with the container yard building toy above, why not take a look at the Lego Technic 42060 Roadwork Crew Set! This set includes working steering on the construction truck as well as a tipping flatbed, and a completely removable trailer. This is another two in one toy as it can be rebuilt into the mini-gritter with plough. The toys when built are around 9cm high, 10cm length and 5-7cm wide. They come in a set of 365 bricks for a whole world of fun for kids.
You might want to check out the Lego Technic 42057 Ultralight Helicopter Building Kit which is a great toy for eight year olds. The aerodynamic design is complemented with the open cockpit, where you can see the detailed seat. Both the main rotor and the tail rotor spins and there is a controllable tail rudder, just use the joystick to operate it. There is a detailed engine with moving pistons, this can mean a whole educational conversation about how engines work, making this toy a learning experience.
There are cool stickers to go along with the red, black and white colour scheme. Children can spin the gear wheel, and the rotors and engine spring to life. All the models in this range come with a special 40th anniversary Lego brick.
Nine Years Upward
What nine year old wouldn’t want to build and play with this LEGO Technic Mine Loader 42049 Building Kit? It’s got a yellow and black colour scheme with a working grabber. There is a detailed engine with moving pistons, but this one includes a central steering mechanism which is articulated, and great looking mega-tires. There is cargo to be lifted and moved around, and not only that, the whole thing can be rebuilt into a Mine Cutting Machine. There are, of course, full instructions available online, plus there is an downloadable app with 3D instructions. It builds into either the Mine Loader which is 9cm high, 37cm long and 11cm wide, or the Mine Cutting Machine which is 11cm high, 39cm long and 13cm wide. It’s a world of building fun!
Real-life is just a Lego brick away with this replica Lego Technic 42061 Telehandler Set. It has a detailed cab, big tires and four wheel steering. It’s completed by an extendable boom and a tipping bucket. The four wheel steering means it can make complex manoeuvres easily, while the tipping bucket can go high into the air with the extendable boom. It comes in red, grey and black colour bricks. The cab has fine detailing and the toy has many realistic features. This toy is another one of Lego two in one toys and it can be rebuilt to be a tow truck. Again there are instructions online in 3D with the Lego building instructions app.
There is also the exciting remote control Lego Technic 42065 RC Tracked Racer! Imagine how their self-esteem will soar as they construct their own remote control model!
This fantastic tracked racer looks a bit like a tank but moves a great deal faster. It goes forward and back, left and right and can make 360 degree turns, as well as moving steadily over large obstacles. The set has everything you need to build this racer except the batteries which you will need to buy separately. The set also builds into an off-road truck. It comes with two motors, a receiver, a battery box and a remote control. The 370 pieces build into the off-road truck size 15cm high by 20cm long and 16cm wide. If you choose the racer it measures 9cm by 22cm by 16cm.
Ten Years Upwards
By the time children get to ten often they are more interested in electronics and these Lego technic toys feed into that but in a positive way, the children can use their skills in engineering and technology to build and operate these creative toys.
For any would-be biker, there is the LEGO Technic 42063 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure Motorbike Kit, a motorbike with everything any child could need. This and other Lego Technic sets in this range have working suspensions so children can build the toy vehicles that have functions just like their real-life counterparts. Technic building systems include building functions like gearboxes, working engines and crane arms. All these then integrate with other Lego bricks to make a whole world of new possibilities.
This particular model was made in partnership with BMW with the iconic lines of the real bikes, including the blue and black colour scheme. The bike has handlebar steering, the BMW telelever front suspension mechanics as well as the detailed dashboard and exhaust. The kickstand can be raised and lowered children can move the motorcycle to see the shaft drive and boxer engine come to life. The large panniers have opening lids, and the all terrain tires make this look amazing. The whole thing was made in collaboration with BMW designers, and kids over 10 will be envious of this great looking model. There is, of course, interactive Lego building instructions in 3D with the downloadable app.
The more nautically minded child might prefer the Lego 42064 Ocean Explorer Construction Kit which is, quite frankly, amazing. It has an orange bottom and blue sides, and it has a mini submarine and a small helicopter. The ocean liner has a heliport too, so you can place the helicopter on it’s spot. Lots of parts of the boat move, including a crane that swings from side to side. There is special section which lifts up so you can go into the “hull” of the ship.
This is another two in one toy which can be rebuilt into a push boat and barge. The dimensions are impressive; the ocean liner is 20cm high by 56cm long by 23cm wide. With the crane boom at it’s smallest point it is around 19cm high and 12cm wide. The submarine measures over 7cm high, 15cm long, and 6cm wide. Helicopter is around 6cm high, 14cm long, by 11cm wide. Push Boat is over 16cm high, 24cm long, by 13cm wide. Barge is around 8cm high, 39cm long, by 13cm wide. There are over 1,300 pieces of Lego which are all compatible with other Lego sets. This is a huge set that will keep your children occupied for hours.
Another fascinating Lego toy is the Heavy Lift Helicopter 42052, which has a terrific number of motorized functions, including a winch and what is known as contra-rotating rotors. This means they rotate in opposite directions, which is necessary for carrying heavy loads. Please note, this helicopter doesn’t really fly, although the amount of amazing features on it may well make you think that it does!
The door to the cargo bay (complete with cargo) opens up and closes without any help – this is motorized too. The winch can carry the cargo right up into the cargo bay all by itself. These are facilitated by the two engines that come with this helicopter.
It’s as well to know that this model takes 6 AA batteries, which don’t come with the set sadly. I think this must be something to do with the new rules about posting batteries from UK post offices, it makes it more expensive to post? But it is annoying when you buy products that need batteries.
However, there is not much more to complain about with this model. One feature that I think is particularly good is that it is designed in such a way, if you play with the helicopter then it doesn’t fall apart. Lego toys from years ago would be fragile, however, you can feel free to “swoosh” with this helicopter as much as you want, and you will find that it’s quite robust. All in all this is an impressive toy that will keep your ten year old occupied for a long time, and can keep Dad’s and Uncle’s occupied too!
LEGO 42068 Airport Rescue Vehicle Toy is the next model set for us to look at. And this is definitely worth a look because this is a special toy. Now this isn’t motorised although there is space for both an engine and a battery pack to add an extra special dimension to this already very special toy.
In real-life, these rescue vehicles can rush into fires at the airport, power through the smoke and flames to put the fire out. They are awesome vehicles that save lives, so no wonder they have inspired such a great model. With twin axle steering and double axle at the rear, this vehicle will go anywhere. It has a huge boom and this means the water jet can point to any fire, including in front of the rescue toy. It too has a detailed engine with moving pistons, and a drivers cab with all the details you could wish for. It has wing mirrors and a tool storage section.
At a maximum this model is over 42cm tall with the boom fully extended. It’s 45cm long and 15cm wide. You can also build, from the same set, a fire rescue vehicle, which includes a dinghy that can be lifted off with a crane. The sizes for the fire rescue vehicle is 31cm high by 55 cm long by 13cm wide. The set is made up of a whopping 1094 piece and it’s perfect for girls and boys aged between 10 – 16 years. Although any age fan of Lego will be thrilled with this model.
Eleven Years Upwards
LEGO Technic 42069 Extreme Adventure Vehicle will inspire your child to enjoy exciting expeditions with this adventure vehicle. With it’s four independent ground-gripping tracks with front steering, plus a wide array of exciting functions. You can watch the doors upswing and find the running boards lowing into position. You can turn the crank which then raises the roof tent, and unlock the tailgate to find the storage drawer with the shovel in it. If you look beneath the hood you will find a V8 engine with moving pistons.
Safety on the expedition is considered with a first aid kit and two fire extinguishers. The roof rack has jerry cans to make sure you don’t run out of fuel. The colour scheme is a striking yellow purple and black with stickers, too.
This is a two in one model and it can be rebuilt into a mobile base vehicle. The extreme adventure vehicle is a huge 30cm high, with roof raised and the doors open. It’s also 44cm long by 25cm wide.
The mobile base vehicle measures 19cm high by 47cm long by 20 cm wide. There are an amazing 2,382 pieces which are compatible with all other Lego bricks to personalise the adventure, too.
Next is the LEGO Technic 42070 6×6 All Terrain Tow Truck which have two motors to power the functions. There is a battery box and a remote control to get the tow truck to drive with front steering, and don’t forget the extendable outriggers, working crane and winch.
This set includes the specially decorated Lego Technic 40th Anniversary brick.
Your child will power over rough terrain with this rugged 6×6 tow truck. This detailed Lego Technic has a red yellow and black colour scheme. Check out the chunky tires, the bull bar with chain and hook. Use the movable lights to check out where you are going and what you might find as you travel through deserts or ravines. Drive forward or reverse, extend the outriggers, raise and lower the crane and winch.
You will find that this is a two in one model can also be used to build a research explorer vehicle.
The all-terrain tow truck measures over 51cm by 63cm by 37cm when it’s fully extended. The research explorer vehicle measures 23cm high by 47cm by 23cm wide. There are an amazing 1862 pieces of Lego technic bricks which combine with other Lego bricks if you want to personalise this vehicle.
LEGO 42054 Technic CLAAS XERION 5000 TRAC VC Building Set is next on the list and this is a fabulous tractor, cleverly replicated from the Claas exerion 5000 Trac VC. It has motorised functions which include a rotating cab, forward and reverse gears and great steering. There are extendable outriggers, and the crane and winch will move remotely. The colour scheme is the same as the original tractor, in green grey and red. The cab moves right round 180 degrees so the driver can face backwards, too. The working crane claw can grab and lift the tree trunk provided, but why not use Lego bricks to construct more interesting things for it to lift.
This tractor is great for any children who want to live on a farm or want to use tractors when they are adults. This is a great engineering project for any child who loves to build and hone their engineering skills.
Because this is a remote-controlled toy after it’s built there are lots of room for play, and the massive tires will mean it can be taken outside and used on flat surfaces. The cab works remotely too!
Another great choice is the LEGO 42043 Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 Truck including the LEGO Power Functions large motor and an advanced pneumatic system which produces an array of motorized features. The kit includes extendable outriggers, automated crane arm and grabber as well as 2 suspended front axles with twin axle steering, 2 suspended rear axles with double wheels. The vehicle boasts Independent suspension a 6-cylinder engine with moving pistons, detailed cab, opening doors and tailgate. With over 2750 parts to keep you occupied you will end up producing a beautifully detailed model with lots of functions.
Twelve Years Upwards
The LEGO Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator is another one of the two in one models, which features different motorised functions. The power functions include forward and reverse driving, a rotating bucket wheel, a conveyor belt that really moves and the superstructure rotates too.
This is the biggest Technics set available and it contains close to 4,000 bricks, so this is definitely for children who are experienced Lego builders. Twelve is the youngest that could possibly work out how to put this together, and it will stretch their engineering skills as well as patience and technical know-how.
It’s a detailed replica of an excavator measuring 41cm high by 72cm long by 29cm wide. Since it is a two in one model, the other version is a mobile aggregate processing plant, which with boom retracted measures 21cm by 88cm by 21cm wide, although with the boom extended it is more than 33cm wide. You can see that these toys are not small and the children will need a good amount of space to build these fabulous monster models.
The mining excavator has a detailed cabin and hand-railed walkways, as well as huge tracks. The power functions motor the conveyor belts and rotate the superstructure, manoeuvering the impressive machine wherever your child wants. When you lower the boom the digging bucket wheel works and then your child can move the mined product onto the waiting mine truck.
Build it again as the mobile aggregate processing plant and play with it all over again!
The meticulously detailed Lego 42030 is another one of the amazing Lego Technic range.
