Some of these Retro Toys still hold a place in many people’s hearts and will probably enthrall modern day children, as well plus bringing back the odd nostalgic tear!
In fact there is nothing that brings a nostalgic feeling to the heart like a retro toy. I think for me the favourite is etch-a-sketch. I had one when I was six, and I loved that thing. I played with it for years, I remember I took it with me when I left home! It’s long gone now of course, but I loved that thing. So let’s take a walk down memory lane and take a look at some toys we might have enjoyed when we were young.
The MG-Genius series two game caught my eye. I didn’t have one of these but I am sure I would have wanted them! Plastic translucent shapes with magnets in, the pieces stick together (magnetically) and from them children can make different shapes and create buildings, boats, or wherever their imaginations take them. Very similar to this is INTEY Magnetic building blocks, which also contains wheels and so children can build small cars that they can then play with.
In a world seemingly full of electronic toys, it’s lovely to see something old school that means children can exercise their spatial abilities. Children will need to work out how the shapes need to fit together, to rotate them in their minds in order to work out how they make the shapes they need. For young children, this is an excellent game and certainly one I am thinking about for my young granddaughter.
Another real classic toy that is still, thankfully, available is a kaleidoscope. Children from three years old can look through the little hole and turn the sides and see the colours and shapes change, and the patterns also. Although I am sure this does have educational value, basic mathematics includes repeating patterns in primary school these days, the charm of this toy is more in the fascinating effect and the way it fires imaginations.
Although everything moves on, sometimes it’s just fun to look back and revisit the toys we had as kids and view them again through the eyes of our children and grandchildren.
